Calis Beach - affordable luxury on the Mediterranean
I have talked before about how Turkey is a wonderful, and inexpensive, holiday location, and today I would like to turn my attention specifically to Calis Beach, (Calis Plaji), on the Lycian coast of Turkey.
Calis Beach is a small resort, only ten minutes away from the port town of Fethiye by bus or by taxi. It has an overall quiet, peaceful and relaxed atmosphere, where you can just enjoy the sunshine and the gentle lapping of the Mediterranean waves, but it also has plenty of restaurants, cafes, bars and hotels along its promenade, and a good nightlife, based more around cafe life, than nightclubs and music.
Calis Beach, as the name suggests, has a fine sweep of sand and pebbles, and the twinkling blue sea is good for swimming, or for just gazing at while you sip your apple tea.
Highly recommended for its excellent food and inexpensive tap beer is Oben, at the western end of Calis Beach. Here you can sit at tables in the shade of vines, and enjoy perfect service and pleasant company.
The hotel we stayed at in Calis Beach was the friendly, family-run Oykun Hotel, situated ten minutes walk from the beach. The hotel has lovely rooms with balconies, two swimming pools, a poolside bar, a pool table, table football, and a bowling green. The breakfasts were a wonderful spread of salad, olives, eggs, bread, cheese, fruit, and more besides. Most days the chef was there frying eggs, making omelettes to order, and dishing up other delights. The evening meals were very good also, and every two weeks there was a Turkish night organized with vibrant Turkish music and dancing.
There are plenty of package deals available to Calis Beach, particularly if you are traveling from the UK, which offer a lovely relaxing holiday without a terrific outlay.
